At least 775 sq inches of unbroken floor space (for example 40 x 20 inches), with 6-10 inches of paper bedding to burrow in.
A solid wheel sized so the back stays straight: 10-12 inches for Syrians, 8 inches or more for dwarfs. Add hides, sand baths and chews.
Diet
A quality hamster seed or lab-block mix, scatter-fed so they can forage, plus small amounts of fresh vegetables and occasional boiled egg or mealworm for protein.
No citrus, onion, raw beans or sugary treats. Dwarf hamsters are prone to diabetes, so skip fruit for them.
Health basics
Wet tail (diarrhoea and a wet rear) is an emergency. Also watch for overgrown teeth, lumps, and bald patches.
Lifespan
Typically 2-3 years.

Syrian hamsters must live alone; even dwarfs often fight when grown. Handle in the evening when they're awake.
Legality varies: Hawaii bans hamsters and California restricts some dwarf species. Check your state before buying.
