A 20-gallon or bigger tank is far more stable than a small one. Use a filter rated for the tank size, a heater for tropicals (76-80°F), and a lid.
Goldfish are coldwater and messy: allow at least 20 gallons for the first fancy goldfish, and a pond for common goldfish.
Cycle the tank for 4-6 weeks before adding fish.
Diet
A quality flake or pellet matched to the species, once or twice a day — only what they finish in about 2 minutes. Add frozen or live foods for variety. Goldfish do best with sinking pellets and blanched veg.
Health basics
Test water weekly. Gasping at the surface, clamped fins, white spots or sudden deaths almost always mean a water problem. Quarantine new fish for 2-4 weeks.
Lifespan
Guppies 2-3 years, tetras 3-8 years, cichlids 8-15 years, goldfish 10-20+ years.
Beginner tips
Research adult size and temperament before buying. Schooling fish like tetras need groups of six or more; many cichlids are territorial.
Some states restrict certain species (for example some cichlids or invasive fish). Never release aquarium fish into the wild. Check your state before buying.
