A large metal cage (degus chew through plastic) with multiple levels, deep bedding, a solid wheel of at least 12 inches and a sand bath.
Diet
Unlimited grass hay and a degu or chinchilla pellet, plus leafy greens and herbs. Degus are prone to diabetes: no fruit, carrots, corn or sugary treats of any kind.
Health basics
Cloudy eyes can signal diabetes-related cataracts. Also watch for overgrown or pale teeth, weight loss and tail injuries — never pick a degu up by the tail.
Lifespan
Typically 5-8 years.
Beginner tips
Keep at least two, ideally same-sex siblings. They are awake in the day, which makes them great to watch.
Degus are banned in some states (including California, Georgia and others the legality table flags). Check your state before buying.
