A tall, multi-level cage (at least 3 ft wide and 3 ft high) with solid wooden shelves, a solid-surface wheel of at least 15 inches, and a hide.
Keep the room below 75°F and out of sunlight. Chinchillas can die of heatstroke above about 80°F.
Diet
Unlimited timothy hay and a small daily portion of plain chinchilla pellets. Their gut is sensitive, so avoid fruit, nuts, seeds, raisins and sugary treats. A rose hip or plain dried herb is plenty.
Health basics
Offer a dust bath in chinchilla dust a few times a week for 10-15 minutes — never bathe in water. A wet coat can grow fungus.
Watch for drooling or wet chin (dental problems), soft or missing droppings, and fur slip from rough handling.
Lifespan
Typically 10-20 years — plan for the long haul.
Beginner tips
They are crepuscular and most active at dawn and dusk. Let them come to you and scoop from below rather than grabbing.
