At a glance

Scientific name: Man-made hybrid (no scientific name).

Freshwater. Generally peaceful.

The blood parrot is a man-made hybrid that doesn't occur in the wild. Breeding it leaves a deformed mouth that can't fully close, a bent spine and an odd swim bladder, so many struggle to eat and swim. Males are usually sterile. Some are also dyed or tattooed for colour — avoid buying those. Choose small sinking foods and watch that each fish actually gets to eat.
