At least 5 gallons, heated to 78-80°F, with a gentle filter and a lid (bettas jump). Add silk or live plants and a leaf hammock near the surface.

Diet
A quality betta pellet, 2-4 pellets once or twice a day, plus frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp a few times a week. Overfeeding causes bloat and fouls the water.
Health basics
Aim for 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and nitrate under 20 ppm. Fin rot, white spots (ich), clamped fins and a swollen belly usually trace back to water quality.
Lifespan
Typically 3-5 years.
Beginner tips
Never house two males together. Change 20-25% of the water weekly with dechlorinated water at the same temperature.
