Quarantining a new animal: a simple 30-day plan

Mites, respiratory infections and parasites travel with new arrivals. Here's how to keep them away from your others.

Separate room, separate tools

Keep newcomers in a different room if you can. Use their own dishes and cleaning tools, and handle them last.

Watch and weigh

For 30 days, check droppings, appetite, breathing and skin or feathers. Weigh weekly. For fish, use a separate quarantine tank.

Book a vet check

A fecal test and once-over from an exotics vet early on is cheap insurance. Mark the cage as Quarantine on the room board so everyone knows.

Nothing here replaces advice from an exotics vet.
